Share your experiences and help with breast cancer research and support

You’re invited to join BCNA’s Review & Survey Group. It’s for BCNA members who are interested in participating in breast cancer research projects, lived experience reference groups and other opportunities. It also ensures BCNA stays in touch with what really matters to our members.

When you join the Review & Survey Group, you’ll receive opportunities to participate in all forms of research, including:

  • online surveys
  • focus groups
  • clinical trials
  • reviewing new breast cancer resources.

There are opportunities to be involved, no matter what type of breast cancer you have, and you can choose to participate only in opportunities that interest you.

In 2021, Review & Survey Group members participated in studies that involved research into topics such as:

  • managing pain and fear of recurrence
  • mental and physical health and wellbeing
  • metastatic breast cancer
  • alternative medicines and treatments
  • lymphoedema.

The findings and outcomes of these projects help improve the experiences of breast cancer patients across Australia. Review & Survey Group members, such as Cindy, often tell us they found these research opportunities interesting, meaningful and rewarding.

‘It is a great way of hearing about, and then having the possibility of being involved in, new and emerging fields of research and development for breast cancer diagnosis. I’d recommend becoming a member of the Review & Survey Group if you have the capacity and interest in making a consumer-based contribution to improving outcomes for those diagnosed with breast cancer,’ says Cindy.

The input from members helps countless researchers across Australia. Here is what some of them have to say about the involvement of Review & Survey Group members.

Joanne Shaw from the University of Sydney says, ‘BCNA’s Review & Survey Group has been invaluable to our psycho-oncology research. The group’s ongoing support ensures that our research is clinically relevant to the concerns of people living with and beyond cancer.’

Michelle Peate from the University of Melbourne says, ‘BCNA’s Review & Survey Group members have been integral for my research into the fertility and menopausal experiences and concerns of people with cancer – it is through your voices that I have been able to get research funding to develop tools that will make a difference.’

Poorva Pradhan from the University of Sydney says, ‘I’m really grateful that BCNA distributed two of my PhD studies in their Review & Survey Group, including a clinical trial. The members in this group are immensely supportive of research. Thanks to BCNA and the amazing women in Review & Survey. Group for helping me in my PhD.’

MAKE SURE YOUR EXPERIENCE IS REPRESENTED IN THE LATEST RESEARCH

Research studies often need to include the experiences of people who:

  • have been recently diagnosed with early and metastatic breast cancer (within the past three years)
  • • have a culturally or linguistically diverse background
  • • live in rural or remote locations.

IF YOU REPRESENT ANY OF THE ABOVE GROUPS, WE PARTICULARLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO JOIN THE REVIEW & SURVEY GROUP
